Lesson Learned (film by Bálint Szimler, 2024)

The ELTE–NFI University Film Club screening and discussion series continues. We welcome university members from all ELTE faculties.

Ten-year-old Palkó, who has moved back home from Berlin, watches the daily life at his elementary school in Budapest with amazement. Children fainting and endless speeches accompany the ceremonial start of the school year. The canteen is filled with the characteristic smell of vegetable stew and bleach-laced mop water. Only Miss Juci, a novice teacher, truly understands Palkó, who is also a victim of the institutional system mired in the “caretaker culture.” This film, which at times veers into the grotesque while dissecting the state of public education, was produced as an independent film in collaboration with several Hungarian producers and has won numerous prestigious awards at international film festivals.
