The network of libraries maintained by Eötvös Loránd University, the University Library Service (eltekonyvtarak.elte.hu/en), with more than 4.3 million documents, wishes you a successful autumn semester.
Enrollment is free for all university citizens, and can also be arranged online through the ELTE Library WebApp application. The collection of libraries is available from the online catalog.
The ELTE University Library and Archives welcomes all students in the heart of the city centre, on Ferenciek Square. You can find information about the services available in each library, the tariffs, opening hours and contact details, as well as the many online services of ELTE libraries on the website of the University Library Service.
On Saturday, the 21st of September 2024, as part of the Cultural Heritage Days, we will open our library doors to the public again.
We would like to draw attention to the protection of our cultural heritage, with a wide range of activities for all ages, including library tours, calligraphic and bookbinding craft programs, presentation of our restorer workshop and old books, interactive Eötvös exhibition, university history display, as well as our concerts.
This year's programme starts at 11.00 with a harp concert by Klára Bábel entitled Sounds of Silence, followed by a chamber exhibition of our museum documents related to the cities and culture of the CHARM-EU (Challenge-driven, Accessible, Research-based, Mobile European University) European University Association will be opened. Our programme concludes with a concert entitled „In a Hundred Versions” - Tamás Cseh’s songs performed by János Bárth. Photo, audio and video recordings will be made of the events. The recordings will be published on the websites, publications, forums and social media of the participating institutions.
Between the 29th of July and the 31st of August 2024, our library and the Eötvös Exhibition will be closed.
Please note that books can be borrowed from the 4th of July 2024 with an expiry date in September 2024, but if the loan expires before the 29th of July 2024, the closing period will be included in the calculation of the overdue fee.
During the closing period, you can return documents in person on working days between 9.00 and 16.00 using the self-lending terminal and book deposit box (Bibliobox) in the lobby or by post (1053 Budapest, Ferenciek tere 6.). The return of the documents will be recorded in the system on the working day and any overdue fees can be settled after the summer break.
From the 2nd of September 2024 we will be open as usual.

According to our tradition, we will join the Night of Museums on the 22th of June 2024. From 3 p.m. in the afternoon until midnight, our library welcomes all visitors with craft activities, concerts, guided tours, restoration workshops and Copernicus Memorial Exhibition.
Our bookbinding and calligraphy workshop is open for children and adults from 15.00 this year.
Our evening programmes open at 6 p.m. with a concert by the ELTE „Eötvös” Art Ensemble String Quartet.
On our Hungarian and English library tours, visitors can learn about the history of the library palace and the Perczel Globe, and take a look behind the scenes at our historic library. Guided by our restorer, you can gain an insight into paper-casting and bookbinding techniques, along with the process of book disinfection.
We invite you to visit the exhibition „The man who moved the Earth out of its place” – Copernicus Memorial Exhibition.
The night will be enriched by the string quartet of the ELTE Art Ensemble at 18.00 and the „More than Klezmer on the Night of Museums” – Sabbathsong Klezmer Band at 20.30.
Guests will be able to colour in their own bookmarks, take part in our Copernicus quiz for small prizes and build our library palace and reassemble fragments of our codex pages with our library puzzle.
The doors of the Eötvös Exhibition will also be open, where you can learn about the life and work of Loránd Eötvös through our interactive tools and the instruments of the researcher.

The ELTE University Library and Archives offers extended opening hours for readers and students on weekdays and Saturdays between the 6th of May 2024 and the 15th of June 2024 until 22.00 hours. Our new community space offers the opportunity to learn, relax, use kitchen facilities and free computer access.
Through our constantly expanding services, we aim to provide ELTE students with an efficient and effective learning opportunity, with the support of the Students' Union and in cooperation with the students.
The following services are available between 20.00 and 22.00 on weekdays and between 18.00 and 22.00 on Saturdays:
During the extended opening hours, reception and general information is provided. The lobby, the Reading Hall and the community space are open to the public only with a pre-purchased library card.

The ELTE University Library and Archives is pleased to invite you to the opening ceremony of its new student community space and the presentation of the book the Dniester Mermaid on the 25th of April 2024 from 13.00.
The Book of Your Life intercultural inclusion project and the limited edition facsimile of the Dniester Mermaid (Русалка Дністровая), a Hungarian-related Ukrainian book rarity and accompanying textbook, will be presented at the event.
Originally published in 1837 by the Royal University Press, the Rusalka Dnyistrovaja (Dniester Mermaid) almanac was published in a facsimile edition by the Eötvös Loránd University and the University Library and Archives. This adventurous little book became not only the first publication in Galicia written in the vernacular, but also the basis for the national revival of the western Ukrainian regions in the 19th century.
In the newly inaugurated community space an exhibition of photographs by James Clifford Viloria, PhD student (ELTE TTK Doctoral School of Earth Sciences), entitled Liminal Quarters, is also on display.
